I'm stealing my friend Whitney's idea for this post, posting what I wore for the day and also whitney to, we had a pretty good run for best tshirts of the day i think, no one can beat us! I'm wearing my new set your goals tshirt i recently got, i kind of love it and its not a black tshirt with white graphics on it, which is what i pretty much wear everyday, so thats good. I think whitneys been wearing that skeleton shirt for 4 days now, haha. washing clothes is pretty overrated though.
So classes are starting again and I got my studio in the school back, it doesent have anything in it yet, because everything is still packed up in my apartment, hopefully this weekend I'll slowly bring all my stuff back into the school and start working. I'm trying to think of projects for myself that i can work on during the school year, nothing to big for I'll still have massive amounts to do for classes, but just little things that could be fun thats I've been wanting to do for awhile.
1. the first is to do some illustrations, more than one color drawings, I'm not sure exactly how I will go about this yet but it will be something fun to practice. I plan on doing a self portrait of some sorts first, I havent dont any kind of self portrait for years I feel like.
2. the second is to make mix cd's and design packaging for them. hopefully i can get someone else on this to so i wont be doing it alone and can make more hopefully. I'm thinking of making all of the packaging, printing it out at school for pretty much free, and taking maybe one night a month and doing it then staying up all night, and hopefully bust out a good number of them, nothing to big, maybe a run of 15-25. Its hard to tell how many i could actually make, and how detailed i decide to make the packaging will have a huge impact on everything, I want them to be somewhat one of a kind things.
We'll see if I can get into these two things, i will definetly be posting them on here if i do, as well as alot of new things to come throughout the school year as i get back into things.
I also just bought the new every time i die album, "the big dirty" its pretty good, one of the only somewhat hardcore bands I'm still into, very short album though it seems. i kind of like how they have changed, very southern rock feeling which is kind of a cool change that has been evident throughout all of their albums i've always felt, just taking it further on this one. I also got a free signed booklet when i bought it at bullmoose, kind of weird eh.
My friend tom has been working in Atlanta at six flags doing caricatures for the summer, he has some pretty awesome ones on his blog which is featured on my friends list, and he also drew one of me, "here". So i busted out the old caricature i had done of me when i was young, the pictures is dated '92. I was a ninja turtle!
I went home to new hampshire this past weekend, first to the warped tour with some friends, then decided to go home and spend time with my mom and my dog chunk, my sister also came home for the weekend from NJ.
The warped tour was pretty good for not actually having any good punk bands play it, it seems as i get older the less i like going to shows as i did when i was a teenager, I dont know what it is, i thought i would love going to shows/concerts my whole life. Well dont get me wrong i still enjoy a good band playing live but just not going to 4 or more shows a month as i did when i was in high school, "they were all drive 2-3 hours to get to the show to". I guess it's just that I'm getting alittle older and honestly i dont like most of the music coming out latly, i use to only listen to current bands, so eventually i could go see them play live, but the last few months I have mostly listened to band I SHOULD of listened to in high school, hot water music and there spin off bands, lifetime, lucero, old movie life, basically anything with a raspy singer. explosions in the sky have also become one of my favorite bands ever and I wish that i had discovered them sooner than i did, maybe i wouldent of listened to as many bad screamo bands as i did.
So back to warped, I spent much of the day alone wondering around watching bands like hot rod circuit, coheed, gallows, mc chris, bayside and alot others, none very notibale i might add. It was hot outside but not as much as last year which made my friend pass out from the heat and spent a long time with her at the medical tent as i heard saves the day play acoustic in the backround not being able to see him though. sad.
When i finally got home to new hampshire on friday It was a good break from portland and a 4 day break from work. i got to spend time with my mom which is always good and good for her at the same time not being able to see me for weeks at a time during the school year, which starts up in 2 or 3 weeks. We went to see The Sound of Music musical in Portsmouth, they have outside plays there every summer and my family use to go when I was little, my mom sister and I went, it was pretty fun, reminded me of when we went when i was little and always loved to climb on this big statue of a whale and slide down it, i kind of remember that more than the actual plays. Sorry no pictures from warped or the play.
When I go home I always end up going for a walk with my dog chunk, I use to have 3 dogs but the other two died recently in the last year and a half. so he's all i have left for a pet, he's pretty awesome, i feel like he;s lonly because he has no other dogs to fight and play around with and go for walks on our 100acres of woods surrounding our house. so he loves to run along as i walk down the road, somehow always staying 10-15 feet in front of me, never letting me get ahead of him until the moment i decide to turn back and head towards home. Sometimes he looks back to see if i;m catching up to him and if I'm not those 10-15 feet back he'll pick up speed with alittle hop in his step.
I've definitely been slacking in the art department latly, I guess thats what summer and not having a studio will do to you,

What did we say to each other

This is a poem which I just recently discovered in my English class, we had to pick out a poem to recite to the class, and I tryed to find something that related to me, after reading through pages of poems this one stuck out, the imagery came right into my head, I wasent even sure what it was about first, but somehow I really enjoyed it. I read it in front of my class, its very short but still has alot of power. I think I want to try and create some type of illustration for it, since the imagery it put in my head is what attracted me to it.
The last two lines are still alittle bit up in the air with me, I have an idea of what they mean, but I could be totally wrong. I tryed looking it up online for what other people had to say, not to much luck yet though.
Here is someone else's interpretation of the last two lines...
"The hooves ready to take flight…you can't work things out if you're always too afraid to face things, if you're always ready to run away…."
It confuses me though because it doesent exactly say hooves ready to take flight.
I've been working on a website latly for myself, and to put my more done projects up on, as opposed to my blog, where its more the process and me talking about them.
I have a website pretty much done that i finished in my web design class, but i'm not really happy with how it looks, i dont feel like it looks like my work, it's more of a black and white not interesting look. so i'm going to be working on a new site in the upcoming summer, and hopefully i'll have it up by the end of the summer. Here's 2 layouts of what the site i have now looks like.
I went to New York last weekend to visit my sister who lives in Hoboken NJ, it was a good trip, I want to go back as soon as i have time and money.
When we were walking around NY decided to go into Barney's department store to look at the Rogues Gallery stuff that they had, cus I havent really had the chance to see much of our stuff in actual stores. It was pretty awesome to see some stuff that I had part in making, and remember actually sending it off to there, then seeing it in the store, it was a good experience.
That stores so expensive though, its pretty much only for rich stupid people, the tshirts were selling for $90 and other long sleeve stuff was around the $200-300 range, crazy. I didnt even look at the other companies pricing in there.
It makes you think though, why is art so expensive, its usually poor artists who have an idea, and try and sell it for as much money as they can, which makes the market for the more rich and well off customers. I know artists have to make a living to, but the artists dont even get half of that money that the store sells it for, they usually buy the stuff from the clothing company retail price, then make it 2 1/2 times the price they bought it for. this worlds about money, thats all i have to say, its sad.
I'm moving on tuesday to my new apartment with my best friends Sarah and Ally, so i'm packin up.
This semester I've been really into making books, I'm trying to think of ideas for my senior thesis next year and what I can do in it, and most of my ideas go back to either screen printing or book making, since thats what i'm most interested in right now, maybe i'll combine the two. Here are some books I made this semester, the first one "red book" is a process book I made for my Information design class, only a few pages are pictured but its a pretty thick process book, I bought an old book from the salvation army and took the cover off and beat it up alot, then used it for the cover of my process book.
2nd is a day planner I made for information design class, I dont really like it, but heres a picture of the cover.
3rd is a book wich has been on my blog before, its my process book for last semester, but last week I made another one of the same book so I could have one for myself since my teacher keeps one copy of it and I only made one copy last semester since it took so long to make.
This is a book i made for my Information Design class. The project was to show how something worked, or how to do something using information design, which pretty much means that getting the message across is the most important thing, and its not so much about your own style and design. I kind of chose to go away from that though and wanted to make a book right from the beginning, and went with one of my initial ideas to show how to do basic screen printing, I based it alittle off of a screen printing pamphlet i have, which is very cartooney. I wanted to go away from the cartoon aspect and try to make it a very professional looking book, even though when you think of screen printing, you don't usually think of professional, but its my book and that's the way i wanted to make it because I didn't want to just make a shitty book like the one I was basing it off of.
I'm pretty proud of the way it turned out, I love the paper and the colors. If I had more time to spend on the actual layout of the book and the text it would of came out alot better, but time is something i don't have lately to spend large amounts of time on a project. But i guess thas how things go in college, a lot of half ass'ed projects.
All and all I like the book though, i enjoy the actual making of the books more than i do laying them out most of the time.
