junior majors process book

This is my process book for my graphic design junior majors class, its an overview of the whole semester, mostly from the graphic esign dept. but also from my personal life as I was going through this semester.
I chose to make it a picture book of the semester of pictures and inspirations throughout the time, it also has some examples of work in it, I wanted to keep it mostly process though and not so much of the finished work, since most people in the class and the teacher had already seen the work, so i wanted to get across my process. It has a big section in it for my time at Rogues Gallery, the company who I've been interning for since working there has been such a big part of my semester. I dont have any progress work for this book, its just the finalized book because I got this book done pretty fast, in about two days, working nopne stop though and in the studio till 7am, but besides that it got done fast. I binded it myself, glueing the pages together in the seam, and then sewing the book to the cover which is chipboard, then using some canvas I'v had around and made a cover out of it, then using a blending marker to put my name on the cover, and process book on th inside cover as well as the hand on the back inside cover.
I've always enjoyed making books when I've had to for assignments, I want to learn more about the binding process, because what i've been doing is pretty much self done with not much knowledge about it, I think they tur out pretty well for not knowing but I want to take a class on book making i think to get to know how to successfully bind a book without worrying about it falling apart for some reason.

ugly/beautiful book 2

This is my final layout for the ugly/beautiful book, it was all drawn by hand and scanned into the computer, the backround is an old album cover that I've been holding onto for awhile, it has an amazing look to it, all worn, stains and alittle bit of mold on it. it made a good backround. All of the brownish greenish stains and red stains were put in seperatlly in InDesign and made somewhat transparent for a more real effect. As opposed to what I usually do and just stain right on the thing i'm working on, but with this project i wanted to create alot of the "dirty" look on the computer using different transparencys.

The layout is going to be professionally printed in a book with everyone else in the class. I cant wait to see how it looks in the book!
The writing tat goes along with the layout is what the layout is based off of. its questions we were all given and had to answer, then make a concept off of the guestions. Mine is an arguement saying that design doesent always have to be beautiful to be successful, and that ugly images, and dirty design can be just as beautiful.

I'm proud of this layout, it too me awhile to come up with a concept and an idea for a layout, but once i got something it came very fast for me. I'm still not 100% set on the font and size of the text i use, but for now i'm done with this piece.
I took pictures of the spreads becuase for some reason I couldent get them to look right when putting them in blogger.

ugly/beautiful book

So I've been working hard trying to come up with a concept for this typesetting book for my graphic design juniors class, I finally came up with one. The assignment is to answer these 20 some questions about graphic design and what it means to us, we need a concept for the book, and it should relate to the questions. I'm going off the question, "Does design have to be beautiful?" I'm trying to bring ugly and beautiful together in this 6 page layout, because I believe design can be ugly and beautiful at the same time. her are a few sketches I have so far, on one page there will be an uglier image, and on the other will be a more beautiful eye pleaseing image, the images will all be black line type drawing to keep the theme of them going together.

Heres some with the backround I am planning on using, its an old album over that I found on the street, I love the used lok it has. I'm planning on adding all the text at the botton of the page in a small font, I want to keep the laout fairly simple. The book should be done by the end of the week.
I'm actualy having fun with this project now, I have so much work due this week because its he last week of the semester, its a very stressful time. But what they say is true, when you dont treat an assignment like homework and do it for yourself, you have more fun, and your work always turns out 100 times better.
